According to multiple sources in the Trump Administration Rex W. Tillerson, the chief executive of Exxon Mobil, whose extensive deal-making for the energy giant has plunged him into global politics from Yemen to Russia, is expected to be offered the secretary of state post this weekend by President-elect Donald J. Trump.
Tillerson has very close ties with Putin, whom he has known for over 20 years. Tillerson has had to negotiate for drilling permits in Russia many times, and has been awarded the Order of Friendship in 2013. An award that is awarded for "Improving relations with the Russian Federation and its people."
Tillerson would have to be confirmed by the Senate, and his ties with Putin would be sure to come up as a problem. Tillerson would need at least 50 Votes, in the Senate, but with only 52 Republicans in the Senate it will be a sure challenge. Senator John Mccain has already said that he would not vote for Tillerson.
